In December 2005 I was 30 years old; happily married (I still am) and the mother to three boys aged 6, and two who were three and a half. Things changed forever when I was diagnosed with Parkinson?s disease. While I cannot imagine my life without it, I in no way would ever have picked to have it happen. The first year after being diagnosed I spent in denial. With a young family at home I had to take the short cut on the path to Acceptance.
In June of 2010 I will be hosting my fourth annual fundraiser for Team Fox to raise funds for a cure for Parkinson?s disease. To date I have raised over $60, 0000 through my fundraising efforts. The last four years have been busier and more rewarding than I could have imagined. I have met so many wonderful people and lived such a more purposeful driven life than I believe I would have without Parkinson?s.
At times things are sad and difficult. I?ve cried in the night about how much I don?t want this disease. In the clear light of day I am reminded that it has been a gift in many ways. I have been able to be a positive spokesperson for many who are struggling with the disease. I feel that because I am so young and many with Parkinson?s are not, I can help to be a voice for them, as well as future generations that may be affected. We must be the soldiers for our own disease in order to win the fight.
I am so grateful for all that the Michael J Fox Foundation has done as being the leaders in fast tracking research and clinical studies. I am unsure if or when a cure will come. I do know that I will continue fighting this fight until there is nothing left to fight for.
