Michael J. Fox to Host Special on Optimism

May 5, 2009

Tune in to ABC on Thursday, May 7, at 10 p.m. to see Michael J. Fox host the hour-long special Michael J. Fox: Adventures of an Incurable Optimist. The program follows Michael as he travels across the globe to explore the enduring strength of hope. He talks to both famous and everyday people, venturing everywhere from the Far East to President Barack Obama's inspiring inauguration.

During this entertaining and inspiring hour, Michael also meets doctors and scientists who share lively insight on the cutting-edge science that's helping us better understand the nature of optimism in all of us. He introduces viewers to a variety of people who haven’t let difficulties stand in the way of their happiness.

During the special, Michael shares that the past 10 years, dealing with Parkinson's and setting up The Michael J. Fox Foundation, have become been among his happiest and his best. "For everything this disease has taken, something with greater value has been given," he says.

Michael J. Fox Talks to Oprah and Releases New Book — Tomorrow!

March 30, 2009

Michael J. Fox’s new book, Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist, hits bookstores tomorrow! Michael’s new memoir picks up where his best-selling autobiography, Lucky Man, left off. He writes about the positive perspective that helped him see challenges as opportunities. Instead of isolating himself during the most difficult parts of his illness, he developed a personal policy of engagement and discovery: an emotional, psychological, intellectual, and spiritual outlook that has served him well throughout his struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Michael’s exit from a very demanding, very public arena offered him the time — and the inspiration — to open up new doors leading to unexpected places.
Want to know more? Watch tomorrow when Michael sits down with Oprah and Dr. Oz to talk in-depth about the new book, his life and MJFF’s urgent work to find a cure for Parkinson’s. Check your local listings to see when Oprah airs in your area.

President Obama Overturns Stem Cell Ban

Michael J. Fox, founder of The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, released the following statement on President Obama’s executive order overturning the ban on federal funding for research involving human embryonic stem cells:

"Today is a new day.  I could not be more thrilled to see President Obama live up to his commitment to get politics out of science.  We have seen, for the past eight years, how much damage the opposite approach has done to science and patients.  Now that the President has taken this critical action, I am excited by the prospect of American scientists carrying human embryonic stem cell research forward toward better treatments and cures that will affect countless millions of lives.

"I commend the President for recognizing the inherent value of scientific freedom, and for helping to create an environment in which it can flourish."

Katie Hood, CEO of The Michael J. Fox Foundation, said:

"We are delighted that President Obama has signed a stem cell executive order, restoring a level of scientific freedom to this country that we believe is critical to the future. Our Foundation is optimistic about the work that will now continue toward better treatments and cures for the millions of people impacted by injury or disease."

MJFF Posts In-depth Interview on Outcomes of CERE-120 Trial

The Michael J. Fox Foundation spoke to Raymond T. Bartus, PhD, executive vice president and chief scientific officer of Ceregene, Inc., about the news that Ceregene’s Phase 2 clinical trial of CERE-120 (the company’s gene therapy approach to deliver trophic factor neurturin to the brains of Parkinson’s patients) failed to show a difference between treatment and placebo.

Read the in-depth interview with Dr. Bartus for detailed information on what the trial data did, and did not, reveal — and what these results mean for ongoing research efforts to find the cure.

Double Your Impact in the Fight for a Cure:
Join the Team Fox Challenge!

The Michael J. Fox Foundation launched the Team Fox Challenge, designed to inspire new and returning Team Fox members to raise an additional $1 million for critically needed Parkinson’s research . The Challenge was made possible by a $1-million anonymous gift from the family of a member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

The goal of the challenge is to grow Team Fox by enrolling new members and inspiring current members, who are already on track to raise an astounding $5 million be the end of 2008, to go above and beyond what they’ve already accomplished in the fight for a cure. All donations generated by Team Fox members new to the program this year or in 2009 will be counted toward the $1-million challenge goal. For 2008 or 2009 returning members of Team Fox, any funds raised above and beyond their previous calendar year total will count toward the challenge.

I am inspired on a daily basis by all that Team Fox members have accomplished in only two and a half years," said Michael J. Fox. "The Foundation’s goal is to put itself out of business, and this incredible group of individuals is on the front lines of our efforts to make PD a thing of the past. I can’t thank them enough."
